Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi there! My name is Steven, and I am currently a 22yr old Masters and Bachelors accounting student at Northeastern University. Aside from posting pictures of pastries and coffee on my Instagram, I work at a Big 4 accounting firm in their international tax group. My job has taken my boyfriend and me from Boston to NYC to LA, and now we are back living in my native city of Boston. Although I am very busy during the week, I like to use my weekends to explore all that the city has to offer whether that be going to local coffee shops or grabbing a pastry at Tatte Bakery with a friend. I generally walk on the weekends during these escapades to make myself feel a little less guilty about all the food I ate on the way…
When did you realize your passion for photography?
I’ve always had a knack for photography, I would say. I remember buying my first ‘expensive’ Canon camera when I was entering high school and using it to capture moments with my friends back home. After a trip to Spain and France my Junior year of high school I started to become more confident in my abilities behind the lens when two of my photos from the trip won regional photography scholarships. Although my days of using a camera are far and few (iPhone only now), my passion for capturing beautiful moments has yet to fade.
How has becoming an Instagram influencer impacted your life or career?
As an active member of this social platform, there are many ways in which it has impacted certain aspects of my life. Instagram has given me the opportunity to explore new places and meet people from around the world. Some friend groups of mine were a result of primary interactions on the app that developed into real-world friendships. In regards to career changes, it has allowed me to have a glimpse into the lives of bloggers that use this social platform as their full-time job and how they conduct such business via Instagram. Although my job at an international accounting firm doesn’t allow for such flexibility in my work-life balance, Instagram has enabled me to use social media campaigns as a second business endeavor that allows me to profit from something I initially took as a creative hobby. But who knows, maybe in the future it will have more of an impact on career choices.
What is your advice to aspiring photographers on Instagram?
Be 100% genuine with who you are and what you are doing. Some of the most influential people on Instagram have the deepest connection with their followers – whether it be the content, the words that accompany the photo, or the person themselves – be true and people will respect that. One of the bigger mistakes I initially made was putting my followers’ needs ahead of my own. The best advice I would give is to do things that make YOU happy and fulfilled, the rest will follow.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Fun fact, people sometimes ask how I get such a high perspective on some of my food or street photos… I’m 6’4″.
