Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a landscape, lifestyle, portrait, and adventure photographer based in Boston. I was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and moved to the United States when I was eight years old. I’ve spent the last eleven years in MA, and the last six of those in Boston. Currently I’m studying mechanical engineering at Boston University, and taking every opportunity and moment I can to focus on photography.
When did you realize your passion for photography?
The first time I picked up a camera was when my father let me borrow one of his during my senior year of high school. I quickly fell in love with taking landscape pictures and soon saved up for my own first camera. I spent every single weekend going on road trips to the mountains and driving around at 4 AM looking for the perfect shot. A year later I was taking portraits for friends and on my way to getting my first full frame camera, the one I still use today. I think my passion is something that developed along the way and I find it still growing every time I see an inspirational image or capture a stunning moment.
What is your advice to aspiring photographers on Instagram?
It’s easy to get caught up trying to share content that you think might be the right content to get you noticed, or fall into the mindset of not believing in your own work when it doesn’t get noticed as much as you would like. Instead, look at the photographers you find inspirational to your own type of content, and find a balance between self-appreciation and self-criticism.
Even the most popular photographers might doubt themselves, and have definitely had times that were hard.
Once you’ve spent a good amount of time mastering your understanding of how photography works, I encourage you to not think about it too much and let it take you wherever it does. Last but not least, definitely have fun and capture moments that have truly real emotions and tell a story.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I’m traveling to New Zealand in July for six months so get ready for lots of weekend mountain road trip imagery!
